We think the 2022 Fire HD 8 Kids ($150) is the best device for younger kids, while the 2021 Fire HD 10 Kids Pro ($200), which is really big in little-kid hands, is better for older children.
The latter, aimed at older kids, has a streamlined case with a little less padding. There's the regular Kids Edition and a “Pro” model. If you want to do anything more than watch Prime video and browse the web, we suggest you spend the extra money for an iPad, Pixel, Lenovo, or OnePlus tablet. While Fire OS seems okay when you pay $50 for it on sale, it feels a lot more limiting at $230. However, this premium-priced tablet is still hamstrung by the same Fire OS that powers the cheaper models.

The screen is bright and sharp enough, the speakers aren't bad, and the cameras are 1080p and much nicer than the cameras on the rest of the Fire tablets. That said, if all you plan to do is consume Amazon content, and the price doesn't bother you, the Fire Max 11 is a nice way to do it. And the list of things an iPad can do that the Fire Max 11 can't is longer than I have space for here. With a base price of $230 you're only $30 away from an iPad.
And, finally, you can't go wrong with Amazon's official cover for something a little more premium.If you're all in on all things Amazon, the Fire Max 11 ( 5/10, WIRED Review) is the company's most powerful tablet. If you want the best minimalist choice for the 2020 Fire HD 8, go with the transparent Timovo. For a more rugged choice, consider the Herize Shockproof from our second list. For instance, the Grifobes Premiu, Fintie Folio, and FunYaung Keyboard are the only such options with dual support.
To reiterate, if you're looking to cover a 2020-model Fire HD 8, only a few of the favorites in our first list will suffice. On the other hand, a folio case like one of the several from Fintie provides a good amount of protection (but not a heavy-duty level) while also outfitting your tablet with one of many fun designs. If you're cool with sacrificing a little functionality for protection and savings, you can't beat the Poetic Turtleskin, which is as rugged as they come. Amazon's official tablet cover, however, is neck-and-neck with it since it's a tiny bit less bulky and sometimes more affordable when neither is on sale. To that end, the synthetic leather model from Grifobes is our favorite overall, thanks to its classy appearance, effective magnet closure, dependable wrist strap, and storage slots.
